At the end of World War II, Wiesbaden became the capital of the newly formed Gran Hesse, created by the US military administration, despite the fact that Frankfurt is a larger city and houses several of the state institutions. However, during the war, Wiesbaden had suffered less damage to air bombings. The city hosted the headquarters of the United States Air Forces in Europe and then has hosted the United States Army General headquarters in Europe.
